Invictus (#69)

This movie is bad, and I’m so disappointed about it! I read the script before watching the film and it’s one of the most beautiful screenplays I’ve ever read, so it’s not the fault of the basic material. Nor does the fault lie with the lead performances from Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, both of whom deserved their Oscar nominations with Damon getting particular kudos for pulling off the difficult South African accent beautiful (take notes Mr. Di Caprio). Rather, the fault is entirely with Clint Eastwood’s direction. There is no sense of pacing or subject control to the film, and this is immediately apparent in dragging sequences and decidedly anti-climactic rugby games. The score is bizarre and inappropriate and aside from a well chosen slightly blown out color palette, his handling of the material is all wrong. Not worth sitting through the 2+ hours run time.
